A Random Grammar Note

It has always bugged me when people say “oh my god, ___________ is so addicting.” I’ve always known that there’s a lingering flame war underneath this topic but have yet to hear a sound explanation as to what addictive is actually correct… Until today. Here it goes:

When used above, addicting is used as a participle; Participles are made from verbs; to addict is not a verb. Therefore addicting is incorrect.

There’s some debate about whether or not to addict is a valid verb, but tell me, does “Steve is addicting himself to cocaine” sound correct? Didn’t think so.

Use ADDICTIVE.

P.S. my phone corrects “addicting” to “addict ing” so even iPhones agree that addicting is not a word.
